My cats bring me materials.....

I have 2 cats. Shelby and Widget. They are down right animal killers. Mice, moles, birds and my favorite chipmunks and squirrels. When they don't eat it all they usually bring it for me at the front door half alive. Feck pretty sweet I say nice tail on that one kitty thanks! Trying to get them to attack the neighbors peacock farm and bring me back one of those. My dog meeko.....well he likes the chickens. I save money there too, just hope I don't get a pissed neighbor. To date Meeko is on probation for his 6th kill. Enjoy the post and tight lines......I also enjoy roadkill finds!

Soft Take...

Fished Carmi this evening and was real slow. Did manage this nice pike and had a few follows as well. This was the softest pike take on an 8inch fly I have ever seen! Thought it was a small bass till it took off like a bat outta hell when I set the hook. Have to say one of the coolest takes I have ever had. It is a nice time to be out as the leaves are changing and falling. The air is crisp and the sounds of geese fill the air and the sweet smell of wood stoves burning.....ahh I love fall in VT! I was fishing one of my deciver patterns in grey shad color in about 3ft of water. Should be good this week as the feed bag should be in full swing tight lines and tie flies!

Les Claypool....

90's funkmetal band Primus is one of my other favorite bands. Les Claypool being one of the great bass players I have seen. I have seen primus twice and their shows are just awesome to say the least. Anyway Les Claypool is a passionate flyfisherman as well. Caught him on the show "flyfishing the world".....he tied flies out of socks! I love his out of the box thinking. Some albums I have include" Sailing the seas of cheese"," Pork Soda" and the "Brown Album". Check it out!

Big Eye Blonde.......

Joe Brooks began his flyfishing and outdoor writing career in the 1940's and carried his love for flyfishing till his passing in 1970. He has given us many a good fly patterns and one of my favorites has always been the blonde series. I first started tying these for bass when I first learned how to tie flies. It is a pretty basic pattern but has lots of room for tweaking or you can just tie them as Joe did. Either way they catch fish! Whatever predator you are after try the Blonde style, you may just pick up a new favorite!

" BIG EYE BLONDE" perfect snotrocket snack!

Bucktail Flies for pike......

Let the ideas flow....Brookes Blonde! Easy to tie and tweak to your needs!

Friday Pike.....

Ahh what an evening out! Pike were very active! I had 3hrs of good pike pickin. Top pattern of the nite was the articulated sub bugs in red and purple. I also fished bunny bugs and" witch doctors" as well. I all I landed 9 pike some small guys and some big. Biggest in the 9lb range I guess. At one point in time I had a pike miss the sub bug and leap out of the air and smacked right into the side of the my boat. Would have to say that is a first for me! Pike on the fly is getting good as the pike are starting to fatten up for fall. Get out and throw some fluff...if you know some one who pike fishes or if you want to go but never tried it do it it is the BEST!

Tools of the Trade..........

Spinning deer hair some like it some hate it. I hated it at first till I forced myself to get it right I guess. I am a self taught spinner. I read researched and for a few years I just plain sucked at it. I would like to think I have gotten better. Here are a few thing I use to help ease the process. A good sharp pair of hair snippers...I only use these for deer hair and that is it. A hair stacker I love the large version for big bad clumps of hair. A comb for brushing out the fuzzy shit from the hide. Double edge razor blades for clean cuts and very bendable to get the sweet curved shape for your pike patterns. And last but not least the hair packer. Now I have a few hair packers and all seemed to piss me off so I decided to make my own real cheap but very effective! I took a rubber cork bottle topper and used a drill bit, twisted half the length of the cork. Ream the hole out a few times and presto the best packer on the planet.....well it is for me but you can decide that for yourself. If you like spinning deer hair then hats off to you if you do not keep trying I did and really enjoy it now. I am tying articulated sub bugs and divers for the new site I have with Dave Lindsay. if you have some tying tips to share would love to hear about it! Tight lines and get out and chuck some fluff......Friday nite pike hear I come!
